  1. Logged on just to post about this when I heard what was happening. I think the manner of this announcement is pretty damn unprofessional. This should have come out as an official email as a heads up, not as some forum post buried in the depths of the internet where the vast majority of players will never see it. I and my wife never visit the forums, we have been subscribed since day 1 and really enjoy the game. So we've both just cancelled our subscriptions as much because of how this has been handled as for the actual server closures. However that said, the community only has itself to blame on this one. It sets a very bad precedent for us getting any company in the future to provide regional servers. I have seen AU players actually complain about the regional servers, as soon as I saw that it was only a matter of time before they got cancelled. The state of the game is also on the community of gamers at large. It was doing well, until a long campaign of bad press (often undeserved) killed it. At the time people were saying the game was dying it had over a million active subscribers. Before F2P was even mentioned it was doing well with very healthy populations. Then the media starts hammering the game, saying they were losing people. Well it's a self fulfilling prophecy idiots. Sheople will believe anything they read on the web. So people leave, F2P becomes a reality and the gaming public loses a great game through it's own cynicism and lack of forethought. While I personally believe a merge into Dalborra would have been the best for all involved, it isn't surprising that this has happened. I'm doing a long post about this because I don't expect to be back much. I really hate to see such a ground breaking, story driven product fail purely through Chinese Whispers and poorly researched, outright false accusations in the gaming media. It's a classic example of "If you say a lie often enough and loud enough, it becomes the truth".
  2. Pretty much just heard about this. Don't visit the forums, have been subscribed since day 1. So logged on to post and find threads about this move. Just cancelled subscription, won't be playing on the US servers. Got more than enough games - Guild Wars 2, LotR, Path of Exile and new Neverwinter and Elder Scrolls games coming up. So I'll be happy to not spend the money on SWTOR and spend it elsewhere. I do feel really bad for the Dev's though. The game had over 1 million subscribers, when rumours went around the web saying the game was doing badly. This then created a chinese whispers situation where people starting saying "Have you heard the game is doing badly". Then news sites picked up on quotes from people saying Free to play was coming (when at that point it wasn't). Gamers quit in droves, forcing the company to make it Free to Play in a catch 22 situation. Basically, the community only has itself to blame on this one. We took a healthy, functional game and through a long, protracted and brutal campaign of rumours and bad press, killed it for ourselves. Hell, there were even Aussies complaining about having AU servers! *** people. It was only a matter of time before this happened. I was hoping for a server merge though into the PvE server so I could keep playing. With the cancellation of the region entirely though, it is finally time to move on. I do feel a little cheated into paying for the preorder though. I really hope they keep the servers up for at least a few months after the release of the expansion so we can get our moneys worth. Otherwise it's a bit of a raw deal from them to get us to buy preorders and then cancel our servers. Still, what can you expect from EAoware.
