only the Armoring mod item will increase your armor rating. the other mods are stat boosters. the armor stat and the armor rating are slightly different stats, they give you the same thing in the end but are displayed different ways on items. you can not directly compare Armor rating and armor. a end game item will have (861 Armor (Rating 140)) but the mod will only show the Rating. it has to be in the item for the Armor to show up. the good news is you can easily see which is better just by looking at the rating.

the game is sensitive if you are running and click something, run up to what you want to use, Stop, then try to use it. should work better that way. not run up to something try to use it and stop at the same time.

you might be able to find one on the GTN, your other option would be to buy a blue tech sword/vibroblade and use it untill you find a lightsaber. you can try the PvP weapon vendor also, you may have to be level 20 for the first bunch of PvP items though.

This is Not a bug, you have to finish certain parts of your story quest first. If you finish off Tatooine and dont get another conversation with your first companion then you might start to worry about it. there is nothing wrong with your game, you just need to play it more. there are not many conversations in the first act of the story.
