  1. God that's f'ing depressing. How many heals do you bring? Seems like a major lack of foresight on BW's part.
  2. Thanks ... I should be clear, I wasn't referring to PUGing ops. Mostly referring to finding a guild that needed tanks for ops, either on the way up or once I've hit 50.
  3. Hi all ... I've been leveling a shadow tank (currently low 30's) and am having a hell of a time finding groups on my server. Basically, during my playtime on the Republic side I'm finding fewer than 50 people online in the Republic fleet. Makes it challenging to find a group sometimes. I seem to be leveling past all the flashpoints without really getting a chance to experience them. So I figured I'd reroll as an Inquisitor given there are usually lots more Imperials online. But there's a thread from a while ago discussing the fact that tanks are less in demand for 8-16 person content compared with 4 person content simply based on the ratio of tanks in the overall group makeup. (Standard flashpoints require 1 out of 4 ppl to tank, but 8/16 man content is typically run with only 2 or so tanks). This has me wondering about a bottleneck for tanks at endgame, and ultimately has me considering whether I should just go Sorc instead of Sin and focus on heals. I don't mind either way, I've always been a healer, I was just hoping to give tanking a shot in SWTOR. So ... now that we're a few months into the game ... what are tanks finding when they get to endgame ... are you able to get into ops easily?
  4. I just did that quest and it's horrible. It gives you very little real tanking experience. 1. When you stealth, the NPC squadmates don't stealth, but they stick right on your tail. This means you can't get in close enough to Mind Maze. Forget about taking one of the packs with 2 strong targets. 2. You have no control over your squadmates so you can't tell them to focus fire or hold their fire until you have aggro. You may be a bad tank, who knows, but this quest is not how you should judge yourself. There are a bunch of tanking guides scattered throughout the forums. Like this: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=225827 Also, there are tons of threads in the Tanking subforum that will give you valuable nuggets of information. Here are just a couple: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=207303 http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=158378 http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=135143 Start running flashpoints and +4 heroics ... this is where you'll start to learn your tanking.
  5. Don't simply assume this is the case. A good tank will mark a kill order using the target symbols ... Make sure you know the order and follow it. Often tanks need to switch target to build aggro across a couple of baddies, and simply following who they're targeting will lead to confusion. Discuss the kill order as a group and follow it == win.
  6. This relates to all tanks, but I haven't seen a dev comment on this. We should probably add the "defense animation blocks abilities" issue to the list. http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=126847 http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=170886
  7. The OP said he was using Theran, not Qyzen. I'm on Tat right and tried soloing a +2 with dismal initial results. The problem I was having was just expecting Theran to heal through everything. Once I realized he wasn't an endless supply of HP I started paying attention to my toolkit of interrupts, active mitigation abilities and even some kiting abilities and I found things more than doable.
  8. Thanks for this and all the other posts. I'll just chill and enjoy the ride.
  9. Hi tanking community. I'm a new tank, having spent most of my time in MMOs as a healer. I've devouring the threads in this sub forum and am pretty familiar with the notion that tanking in SWTOR isn't the face roll that post-BC WoW has become. Frankly, this is exactly why I'm interested in tanking in this game ... I want the challenge that comes with needing to plan and execute fights rather than simply pressing the easy-button. However, after running just a few flashpoints, I haven't found them to be terribly challenging. (At the moment, I'm a lvl 24 shadow and have just run HS and Athiss a couple of times). It seems like, so far, zerg mode trash pulling is working just fine, which only seems to encourage poor DPS play, AoE spam, DPS'ers pulling, you name it. So as much as I'd like to demand that my teammates wait for my lead, I'm finding it hard to make the case for well thought out pulls, using cc, focus fire, etc. I'm assuming that these are just simpler, starter flashpoints and the harder stuff, the stuff that requires thought, coordination and communication, are coming later. Is this true? When do become less forgiving and more noticeably start punishing a.s.s.h.a.t behavior? Since zerg-mode instancing is boring to me, I'd almost rather just power level and wait until later to learn to tank ... when FPs are harder, and possibly, just possibly, DPS'ers have started to shift their thinking. Is this flawed thinking or are there things to be learned in these easier instances? Also, I hope this isn't coming across as a whinge or a troll. I'm really appreciating all the insights I've gathered from this forum. I'm determined to learn how to tank the right way, but am just not sure if that's possible at such a low level. Regards, Elrad.
  10. I'm not understanding the descriptions for each of these symbols. "cc" I obviously get, but what's the difference between Focus target vs. burn 1/2? I assume "MT"/"OT" means that I (or off-tank) holding these till the end? Would someone mind posting a couple of example mob packs and how you might mark them? Sorry if I'm being a bit thick here. I'm new to tanking and am only a lvl 15 Vanguard right now (which mean I haven't tanked squat yet) but and starting to think about how I'll approach my first FP. I don't want to be one of those tanks.
  11. Thanks for this. I'm only lvl 15 right now with my Vanguard so I've got a long way to go before this becomes useful to me. But I'm bookmarking this for sure. Having spent most of my MMO time as a healer I'm a bit nervous but excited about making the switch into tanking. Anyone come across any good threads/blog posts that cover how to level as a tank? Not the solo/leveling part, but flashpoints. It's a bit daunting contemplating a flashpoint knowing that I won't have most of my important tanking talents for some time.
