A DoT in this game is something that is cast and when off of cast continues to do damage. Force lightning is casted/channeled for 3 seconds and then comes off of cast and does not continue to do damage until recasted. Affliction and Crushing Darkness are casted whether channeled or not and then continue to do damage as you use other abilities hence the term DoT.
