What is the general opinion about the state of the game after the F2P transition and server merges? Was it for the better? Did it do more harm than good?

Hello all. I really have no idea how the crafting system works. I don't know where to find schematics, what are the benefits of reverse engineering... pretty much every thing. (Those two mostly though) Any useful links to web pages explaining things would be appreciated.
