  1. I agree entirely with everything you said Drayde. I was merely trying to point out that getting coms as every quest reward wasn't always the best idea. Back to helping you out, one thing to remember is that a lot of the skills required to play any game well will be picked up as you play more. It's actually a large step in the right direction to come on these forums and ask for help and you should be sure to do the same thing in game. Is there anything in specific that Drayde might not have addressed that you need help with?
  2. You have to complete his companion story missions after getting his affection over 9000.
  3. DraydeRhionnan summed up getting gear and stuff pretty well I must say and I only have a couple points to dispute. The first is that you need or should have orange gear ASAP. While orange gear is nice because it's modable I wouldn't go out of my way at an early level to get it especially since you'll find plenty of green and blue gear that'll suit you just fine at earlier levels. Another point I would dispute is always getting commendations as quest rewards. If you see a piece of gear or a mod that you can use and that is better than what you currently have equipped you should get it over the 1-3 commendations always. Commendations can be used to buy gear and are quite valuable but 1 commendation is not worth as much as a new piece of armor or a new mod which can cost anywhere from 4-12 commendations.
  4. I'm really worried about starting some kind of flame war with this but I gotta say I do quite well as a Guardian tank and always have. I did countless FPs on my way up to 50 and rarely to never had trouble holding threat from my group. As long as you get the Single Saber Mastery talent from the Vigilance tree and Stasis Mastery from the Defense tree things go very well. Single Saber Mastery turns Force Sweep into a melee range AOE taunt and Stasis Mastery can function as a secondary taunt if used correctly. The only problem I've ever had is when I had a lvl 50 DPS Sage in my group while I was lvl 46. He was in mainly Battlemaster gear and I had trouble keeping threat off of him all of the time. My damage is severely lacking but my threat generation has always seemed fine.
  5. In response to darkenwolf: I don't know a single person who has gotten an entire War Hero or even Battlemaster set that has then turned around and gotten an entirely different set just for its mods or set bonus. It just takes way too much time for the small pay off. Therefore if you're not gonna get two sets of PvP gear in order to make up for what is lacking in the first set you get Stalker is the way to go. As far as augments go they don't make a HUGE difference but it is nice to have the extra stats. One thing to bear in mind is that most stats other than Endurance and Power become far less valuable after a certain point so a good balance is definitely what you want.
  6. If you get both Blood of the Sith and Raze you will be running with a hybrid spec. This isn't necessarily a bad thing it just means it's not really a Madness spec. Honestly having played Madness up into lvl 50 endgame stuff I can say for sure that it works fine as an Assassin DPS spec so long as you use Death Field and your DOTs to their full potential.
  7. lvl 41 Defense Spec Guardian here (at the time of this writing). 1. Honestly haven't asked around to many people what their opinion of Guardians is. However, I have received quite a few compliments for my ability to tank through several Flash Points and Heroics so the class must have something going for it. 2. I love playing Guardian tank, the high mobility is great especially when coupled with the ability to screw around with whatever you're attacking, ie. Force Push, Force Stasis, Hilt Strike. While I do fare much better as a tank when fighting 1 target I can almost always manage a medium-large group if I remember to use all of my abilities. As far as I can tell the class may be a little worse at dealing with groups of enemies but this can be counteracted with decent gameplay.
  8. lvl 50 Madness Sin here. 1. TBH I'm not sure how other classes perceive my spec but I have plenty of friends who play high tier PvP with Battlemaster and often even War Hero gear who have a lot of trouble taking down Darkness Assassins. Deception and Madness Assassins also cause an enormous amount of damage when used correctly. 2. Madness was a spec that took some getting used to but is really rewarding when I get my rotation down right. Its hit and run capabilities are unparalleled and the amount of damage I can dish out with DOTs alone is enough to win many engagements. I frequently make it into the top 5 of the damage charts in Warzones and am often the top 1-2 out of all Consulars and Inquisitors in the game. For the record, I want to make it clear that Madness is not in anyway over powered and I'm not trying to make it sound like it is, it's just quite good if you can get the hang of it.
  9. First off, I'm not sure what other people are thinking but the PvP gear you definitely want is the Stalker gear. As Inquisitors we have 4 options, Survivor, Force Master, Force Mystic, and Stalker. We can rule out Survivor immediately because with the highest Defense and Endurance ratings it is clearly the tanking set. Other people now have been suggesting going full Force Master or mixing a few pieces of Force Master in with Stalker but I can tell you right now that as a Madness specced Assassin that the added Alacrity in the Force Master and Force Mystic sets is completely useless. There is only one ability with a charge time that a Madness Sin has at his disposal and that is Crushing Darkness. Conveniently this is the same ability that has a buff called Raze that makes it free of force cost and gives it an instant cast. There is no reason that a Madness Sin should EVER be standing around casting an ability because it should never use Crushing Darkness without the Raze buff. Force Master and Force Mystic gear is for Sorcs who have multiple channeled abilities and abilities with cast times. On doing well in PvP some other people here have made some good points. Don't be the first into combat, try to hang around the edges and tag as many people as you can with Death Field, Discharge, Creeping Terror, and Crushing Darkness (but only when the Raze buff is up). In 1v1s if you can get Death Field and all of your DOTs on the other guy the constant internal damage will tear him apart. If you seem to be losing despite this a good tip can be to use electrocute/whirlwind to cc them briefly so you can run around and maul them from behind (I put 3 points in the Duplicity talent making Maul ignore 50% of armor occasionally and making the overall ability much better). Other than this, conduct hit and run tactics, if you see yourself getting targeted or taking too much damage, Force Speed away. The combination of Force Shroud, Force Speed and Force Cloak can get you out of any situation if applied correctly.
  10. I'm not gonna pretend to know any solid numbers for this about what sort of dps Darkness puts out compared to Madness or Deception but I can count and based simply on the number of offensive abilities in the Darkness tree compared to in the Madness tree Darkness really shouldn't be capable of dealing nearly as much dps. The Darkness tree is designed to make the Sin into a tank ie. be able to take and/or mitigate damage while throwing out just enough damage to keep the attention of all surrounding mobs. I am not saying that Darkness Sin's are only viable in PvE, in fact good tank specced players can be incredibly hard to kill in PvP, but they will never have comparable dps to a decent dps specced player.
  11. Right... but being as Dark Charge is the Sin's tanking charge you're going to be doing pretty minimal DPS compared to at least Lightning and probably Surging Charge as well (being as I play Madness I've never actually used Surging Charge). I really like Madness in PvP because you can run into the thick of things, throw down a bunch of DOTs all super charged by Death Field and then Force Speed/Force Cloak out of there if things get too hot, ie. you get targeted.
  12. I've played a Madness Sin all the way up to 50 and have had few problems other than being very squishy if targeted. Phil is right about being careful with your AOEs especially Death Field that you don't break any CCs but under no circumstances should this keep you from using Death Field, it is the Madness Sin's most powerful/useful ability and is really what makes the spec good. Secondly, I'm sure this was just a typo on Phil's part but Mind Control is the Sin's taunt, Mind Trap is the Sin's CC that requires stealth and both the Sin and its target to not be in combat. Honestly, I've really only had to use Mind Trap in FPs and Heroics, and it probably shouldn't have to be part of your everyday rotation. I have never had a serious issue with questing by myself as usually Khem can hold aggro while I melt everything with DOTs. Could the issue perhaps be your rotation? Personally I do: Death Field>Creeping Terror>Discharge>Shock>Thrash/Maul(until Raze is activated)>Crushing Darkness>Assassinate. If that seems too complex or things are dying before you can go through the entire rotation then just remember to use Death Field every CD, your DOTs every time they wear off, Crushing Darkness every time it's free, and Assassinate every time you can. Remember you are probably playing one of the more complicated Assassin specs so if you get really frustrated a respec might not be crazy. Good luck!
  13. I currently play a level 48 Madness Assassin and can tell you that it is a little complex but really fun once you get the hang of it. The first thing to remember is that you are really squishy in both PVE and PVP so the second you start taking damage you should start eyeing both Force Cloak and Force Speed. The second thing to remember is that Death Field and all DOTs are your friends. If I am attacking a group of enemies (again in either PVP or PVE) I usually end up spamming Lightning Discharge, Creeping Terror, and Death Field on everything at once. After I have my basic DOTs (including Death Field's Death Mark) on almost everything in front of me I start focusing down specific targets. This strategy turns all targets into manageable, bite-size pieces that I can tear apart with Maul and Assassinate. For me a good rotation that works is Death Field>Creeping Terror>Discharge>Shock>Thrash/Maul(until Raze becomes active)>Crushing Darkness>Assassinate(when below 30% obviously) After going through this just work on keeping Discharge, Creeping Terror, and Crushing Darkness applied to whatever you're attacking and things should work out well. Madness may be one of the more complex specs to use but it can be really rewarding when used correctly so my advice is to stick with it and learn the many tricks of the trade through rotation refinement. Alternatively I've heard that Deception and Darkness can be more straightforward and Darkness is definitely more survivable so if Madness really doesn't work for you a respec might not be crazy. Hope I could help! Good luck!
