basically once you finish your starter planet ...around lvl 10-12. You will meet on Dromund Kaas. Not sure how you can help each other in story missions...sorry

Personally I have to say Flamethrower is just fine. Of course I only see it from my POV which is PvE centric. Based upon the fact that the whole game is PvE centric I doubt you can balance the skills toward PvP (which is just a small portion of the game) wihtout destroying the PvE part of the skills. On a side note...I think it works just as intended. Ever seen anyone weilding a flamethrower run around while using it? *shrug*

The problem are not the missions but your way of doing them. You need to be careful, think before you pull and have a balanced group. I actually enjoy the tougher missions in SWTOR as you cannot just run in like a headless chicken as in some quests in 'this other game' Please BW, do not dumb down the quests. Players should learn to master their environment instead.

Yes found it as well yesterday. Unfortunately we also found out that Mako does not suffice as healer for this flashpoint
