Why did Jeff Hickman lie to subscribers about the future of the game? | 05.17.2013, 11:02 AM
Hey folks,

I will just be as honest as I can here, it was a poor choice in wording on our part. I know that players have made decisions around whether to remain a subscriber based on those words which makes it all that much more sensitive. I apologize if you feel that you were misled by what we said in that blog. Since this blog I feel we have been more consistent in our messaging that you can expect things like cosmetic and convenience features (like Appearance Designer) are the types of things we usually place on the Cartel Market.

It has always been our plan that as new content is released,(such as Flashpoints, Operations, in-game events, daily hubs, etc.) that subscribers will get access to these pieces of content. This is unlike a free-2-play player who will need to purchase access to that content. This is why we stated subscribers gained "unlimited" access to that content, because you get that as a part of your subscription.

For Cartel Market items, you have access to purchase all of them, as do F2P players. What sets you folks apart is your monthly stipend which will allow you to purchase those features at no additional cost should you choose. I realize with your stipend, and with all the features we have, you may not be able to get it all at once but you can get it in time as a subscriber.

With that being said we have definitely heard your frustrations around Game Updates and the value you feel as a subscriber. I don't have details today but we are continuing to look at options moving forward to make sure that you don't feel that way.

Hi there folks,

I can confirm that there is a bug with Assault Trooper; it's not increasing the crit bonus damage for Ion Pulse, just like the OP stated. This issue is slated to be fixed in Game Update 2.1.1, but we also have not completed testing, so there's always a chance that the patch number could change. If that happens, I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks!

Hey guys,

Most of the gear in the game can be dyed, but here are some notable exceptions:
  • Most gear wearable below level 15
  • Most non-crafted Premium quality gear
  • Some Reputation Items
  • Some Lore Items (such as Darth Malak's Armor)

Hope that helps! If you think you have any gear that cannot be dyed and does not fall into the categories above, please let us know!

How many of your characters have you given a makeover since Game Update 2.1 went live on Tuesday?

Personal Answer: I think it is up to 3 characters. Besides changing my smuggler to a Cathar, the rest have been small tweaks like a new hair cut.

The very simple answer to this question is that yes, we absolutely listen to player feedback! However, the answer is technically a lot more complicated than that.

I think sometimes players on the forums wish that the process was just as simple as "I want X thing to be like Y" and that we can simply just change it to Y. Unfortunately it is a lot more complex, but I think this could be a good post to give some insights into what player feedback looks like on our side.

It happens very often internally where we, the community team, will raise issues to the development team that we have seen from player feedback. This is anything from a bug to just a general amount of criticism on a certain feature. What we help to provide is player feedback in as constructive a way as possible. This way it will give the developers perspective on how you folks are reacting to a system, both the good and the bad, and what you think can be changed to improve it.

This is where it gets complex, we provided player feedback, but that is just one small component of everything that goes into when a decision is made. From there, our developers can then grab metrics to see if the player feedback is supported through data. As a random, made up example:

"Players are complaining that the Assassin skill "I kill stuff" is worthless and no one uses it, it needs to be replaced."

Our developers could pull skill information on every Assassin in our game and validate what % of players are using that skill, or not using it. With data and feedback in hand, the developers also have to consider a few other components, how will it affect the company (if it is tied to monetization), how much development time will it take, if we use development time for this change will it affect something else? In this example if the developers see, using data, that 93% of all Assassins use "I kill stuff" than we can see that most likely it is just a perception issue that the skill isn't good. However, it doesn't mean the player feedback is wrong, it just means that we have two pieces of the decision making process that don't agree and more research is needed.

It should also be stated that sometimes there is feedback or ideas that come to us via player feedback that we ourselves love. However from the development side they are very difficult, time consuming, or simply just not possible. Sometimes this can be even be for things that appear like very simple changes to our game when in fact they are quite the opposite!

One of our roles as a community team is to pass on your feedback and to act as your voice in these discussions. What is important to understand is that player feedback is just one of many components that go into each decision. I also would note: remember that something like the forums are actually just one small component of player feedback. The community of our game is the forums, social media, and the many, many other players in-game who don't talk about SWTOR on either of those mediums.

I hope that gives a bit of insight into what happens with player feedback when it is received. I know it can be frustrating to feel like your feedback isn't always listened to but I assure you that your voice has a seat at the table.

Also to be fair it probably won't be down for 2 hours. That's probably a maximum. I've already got the patch downloaded, just waiting for servers to come back up.
Both of these things are true. We appreciate your patience on the Friday patch; we couldn't leave exploits in the game until the next scheduled maintenance.

On that note, though, the next scheduled patch has a good number of bug fixes lined up!

Hi there folks,

This thread mentions a couple of things, and I want to get some clarification about what our Synthweavers are experiencing. Is the tooltip mentioning that you need a different Crew Skill to Reverse Engineer, or is the info blank on each piece that you're having trouble with? Can you give some specific item names, please?

As a side note, the "Insufficient Skill" issue was fixed with Game Update 2.1, so please be sure to mention if you are seeing this still!

Thanks in advance for your information, and we'll try to get to the bottom of it and get you and update on a fix ASAP.

As was pointed out in this thread, the reason these materials were increased in vendor value was because we removed them as rewards. I've confirmed with the developers that we do not intend for them to ever be used again. Sell away!

2.1.0a has been deployed to fix this issue, and the patch note is here. You can now start the launcher, download the patch, and play. We genuinely appreciate your continued patience while we resolved this issue.

This is a client side fix that will require that you restart your launcher and download a small patch. As soon as the patch has been deployed (2.1.0a), I'll let you know and patch notes will appear in the launcher and on the web.
